The engagement between Prince Carl Philip of Sweden and Sofia Hellqvist was announced on 27 June 2014. The couple met through mutual friends in 2009 and began dating shortly thereafter, however it hasn’t all been plain sailing due to Sofia’s past career as a glamour model and reality star. After five years together, Carl Philip presented Sofia with a ring with a brilliant-cut center diamond surrounded by a circle of smaller diamonds.
Carl Philip and Sofia were married on 13 June 2015 in the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace. Although it is a tradition in Sweden for the bride and groom to walk down the aisle together, Sofia chose to follow the example of her new sisters-in-law by having her father walk her halfway before handing her over to her future husband.
After the wedding, the bride and groom rode a horse and carriage back to the Royal Palace where the couple had a 21-gun salute. On the balcony of the palace, the newlyweds greeted well-wishers with the rest of the family while Carl Philip thanked everyone for sharing in their happiness. The festivities continued with dinner in the White Sea Ballroom of Stockholm Palace and dancing in Karl XI’s Gallery. The colourful wedding cake contained pop rocks (fizzing candy) as a surprise for the guests.
Made by Swedish designer Ida Sjöstedt, Sofia’s wedding dress was a strapless dress of crêpe silk in three tones of white with a flowing train and a long-sleeved Italian silk organza overlay appliquéd with couture lace made by José María Ruiz. The veil was made of tulle with sheer cotton lace and held in place with an emerald tiara which was a gift from the bride’s new in-laws. Sofia’s bridal bouquet consisted of coral and cream roses, with the traditional myrtle from the grounds of Sofiero Castle.
