Beatrice Elizabeth Mary was born in London on 8 August 1988 and is the eldest daughter of Andrew, Duke of York, and Sarah Ferguson.
Beatrice’s name was not revealed to the public for almost two weeks after her birth and many were taken by surprise by the unusual choice, however the princess was named after the fifth daughter of Queen Victoria. the name Elizabeth was chosen in honour of her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Mary was chosen after her great-great-grandmother, Queen Mary, and it is also the middle name of her maternal grandmother, Susan Barrantes.
Beatrice was diagnosed with dyslexia as a child which caused her to delay her exams but she eventually left school with A Levels in drama, film studies and history. Afterwards, Beatrice attended Goldsmiths College, London, graduating with a BA in History and History of Ideas in 2011.
Since her eighteenth birthday, Beatrice has been actively involved with several charities, particularly those involved children, including Springboard for Children and the Teenage Cancer Trust. In April 2013, Beatrice became royal patron of The Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre, a charity who helped her overcome her own academic challenges.
